Garden love...

The quote for work has arrived, the gardener has been booked, we are gonna get the white picket fence! This is just chocolate-box-cottage-perfection for me. Its going to have a lavender border too - 'sigh'. Now when I say gardener, its not quite Desperate Housewives territory, but nevertheless I shall be watching with interest.

We wage an ongoing battle with our garden as it borders with acre after acre of arable farmland. We have crops of potatoes and celery and lettuce surrounding us in the summer months. Seriously it makes you want to eat organic when you see how much tractor action there is, spraying all the time, day and night. I did one year decide that my biblical-style hayfever affliction was caused by the spraying...and then eventually conceded it was probably just the pollen.

Last year we had potatoes - good crop, low maintenance, no tractors spraying at 10pm when you are soaking in the bath. Just my luck: I went with my youngest to a kiddy birthday party. You know when they are still at an age where the parents stay and 'help' them choose their sugary party food and generally hover around. Making small talk, I was telling one of the dads how I would steal a few potatoes from the field every now and then. He announced that they were his potatoes, he was the farmer and that it was his crop and could I kindly refrain? He really did not see the funny side... Hmmm

But back to the garden - we try to tame it, but it does run wild, especially in summer. My poor husband is out there mowing and mowing trying to keep it looking like a lawn. I loose patience...but now the white picket fence, I will have new-found interest :-)
